The project ELIRA 2.0 was a research project aiming to investigate how we can improve the situation of Roma children from Romania and of their peers raised in socio-economically disadvantaged communities. The results of the intervention program showed that an intensive program aimed at language development (in general) and vocabulary (in particular) can lead to significant grains of the vocabulary, listening comprehension and reading comprehension. Yet, the generalization of these results is limited to the words and texts included in the project (with the exception of the vocabulary standardized test which showed positive and significant long-term effects). These promising results indicate several solutions for improving the literacy skills of the children from disadvantaged communities but also future steps that need to be taken in order to increase the effectiveness of educational interventions.
